Election Day is here. And this time, it really is about your life. I am not being dramatic.

I know every election is framed as the most consequential election of our lifetime.

But believe me when I tell you: this municipal election really is. (Don’t roll your eyes.)

I’m writing this a little politically babalaas. I spent far too much time last night, after I got back from the IEC’s Results Operation Centre, glued to the US midterm elections, watching the battle for control of Congress unfold.

And in my sleep-deprived state, I opened my gate this morning only to discover that my rubbish STILL hadn’t been collected.

Nothing quite brings you back to South African reality like an overflowing dustbin on election day.

And there you have it. The case for voting today.

Here’s the short of it. This election is not about grand political speeches, ideological battles or who has the best campaign T-shirt. Kgalema Motlanthe already explained why on The Debrief.

I have said it before and I will say it again! This election is about whether water comes out of your taps. Whether the lights stay on. Whether sewage flows down your street. Whether potholes swallow your tyres. Whether your rubbish gets collected. And whether you feel safe walking home.

Kgalema Motlanthe made an important point when I spoke to him: this election is not about ideology. It’s about your lived experience.

And journalist and author Nickolaus Bauer reminded us on The Debrief not to lose hope by the reality of governance in your town or city! Even the most broken places can be turned around. His example? Johannesburg’s Ponte Tower, once a symbol of urban decay and now a remarkable story of renewal.

The point is that decline is not inevitable. And neither is recovery. Both are shaped by the decisions we make and the people we elect.

So, if you need a reason to vote today, look outside your front door. (Again, don’t roll your eyes.)

Now, the practical stuff. Because democracy comes with admin.

Here’s what you need to know before heading to the polls:

* Voting stations are open from 7am to 9pm. If you’re in the queue by closing time, you should still be allowed to vote.

* Take your ID. If you’ve lost it, you can apply for a temporary identity certificate at Home Affairs.

* Not sure where you’re registered? SMS your ID number to 32810.

* You can wear a political party T-shirt, but campaigning inside the voting station is prohibited.

* You don’t have to vote for the same party on every ballot. You can make different choices for your ward councillor and proportional representation vote.

And please, don’t let a long queue put you off. ASSEBLIEF.

Which brings me to…

Three things I’m watching today.

1. The IEC’s big test

The Electoral Commission has one job today: make it as easy as possible for eligible South Africans to cast their votes. But logistics matter. A lot. How quickly do queues move? Are voting stations adequately staffed? Do systems work? Are there enough ballot papers? IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya has spoken about a “war on queues”. Well, today we find out what that actually looks like. Because a badly managed voting station can mean the difference between someone casting their ballot and giving up. (Please don’t give up.)

2. Will frustration translate into votes?

We’ve spent weeks reporting on communities without water, crumbling infrastructure and growing anger at local government. But will that anger drive people to the polls? Or will disillusionment keep them at home? That’s one of the biggest questions of this election. And I’ll be watching whether voters punish incumbents, give smaller parties a chance or simply stay away.

3. The fake news machine

I made the mistake of opening X this morning. Wow. The misinformation is already wild. From questionable claims to misleading videos and political propaganda dressed up as news, election day is a playground for people trying to manipulate what you believe. Please verify before you share. And remember, a viral post is not necessarily a true one.

Now for the good stuff! What we’re doing at The Debrief today?

Our team is out working on some interesting stories. But our biggest job begins when the voting ends. Because casting your ballot is only half the story. We are really committed to helping you understand what happens next. We’ll be at the national results centre, bringing you live interviews, analysis and explainers as the numbers come in. We’ll unpack who’s winning, who’s losing, what the results mean for our cities and what happens when no party wins an outright majority. And yes, we’ll take you behind the scenes too. The chaos. The caffeine. The frantic number-crunching. The politicians trying to explain away a bad night. All of it.

Our promise is simple: less noise, more context. And as always, we want you to be part of the conversation. Tell us what voting is like where you are. Are the queues moving? Is your station organised? What are the issues that pushed you to vote? And most importantly, what do you want us to explain as the results come in?

For now, go vote. (PLEASE.)

I’m hoping that by the time I come back from the voting station, my rubbish would be collected.

Let’s Debrief.

Happy voting day South Africa
