I don’t imagine many people are happy when Devi Sankaree Govender shows up at their door.
She is probably there to expose something, challenge an excuse or ask the uncomfortable questions that others have avoided.
But when she arrived at The Debrief, we were ecstatic.
For many South Africans, it feels as though we grew up watching Devi. She became a household name through her fearless investigative reporting and her years on Carte Blanche.
We know the journalist on television: direct, courageous and unwilling to let people evade accountability.
But I wanted to really pick her brain.
Where did she find the courage to ask Nelson Mandela a tough question? How has she remained disciplined and focused throughout her career? And what has kept her asking difficult questions all these years later?
Our conversation offered a rare glimpse of Devi behind the scenes and taught me a lot about her work ethic and rigour.
What struck me most is that she has never tried to turn herself into someone she is not. Her authenticity is not a television persona. She has remained true to herself while insisting on rigour, accountability and journalism that serves the public.
We spoke about her journey, the values that guide her and what it takes to keep showing up with courage.
