We told his story. Now he can expand his farm

Young KZN farmer dropped out of university and started farming to survive

We want to tell you about Lindokuhle Mabaso.

Not too long ago, he was a young man who dropped out of university and turned to farming just to survive.

When The Debrief Network first told his story, he shared his dream of expanding his small farm so that it could provide for his family and community.

That dream is now coming true.

After seeing his story, the Salaam Foundation reached out to us and asked to be connected with Lindokuhle.

What happened next shows the real power of storytelling. With their support, Lindokuhle’s farm in northern KwaZulu-Natal is being transformed.

He now has new equipment, fencing for two hectares of land and labour support. What started as a personal struggle to make ends meet is now becoming a story of growth, empowerment and opportunity.

For Lindokuhle this is much bigger than him. “We already creating job opportunities, there were people that there we hired with this funding.”

The Salaam Foundation says they believe in this kind of empowerment. “Growing your own food, instead of just handing out food parcels, is what matters,” says Director Fatima Patel Sookharia.

She added: “We look for small farms and we try to help them in whichever way we can. Salaam Foundation has helped to extend this farm by providing fencing for 2 hectares behind me, and then with the tractors to graze the land and to put up the fencing, we've helped with the labour and this is how this farm is now gonna be developed over the next year.”

Already, new jobs are being created on the farm. There are also plans to invite schools so that young people can see agriculture in action and learn why it is so important for our country’s future.

Lindokuhle is no longer only a farmer. He is now an employer, a mentor and a powerful example of how supporting local farmers can uplift entire communities.

This is what happens when stories lead to action. By sharing Lindokuhle’s journey, The Debrief Network helped connect him with partners who could turn his vision into reality.

His farm is becoming a hub of growth. It is producing food, creating jobs and inspiring the next generation of farmers.

Through resilience, partnership and the power of storytelling, Lindokuhle’s journey is no longer just about survival. It is about building a future.

This is why we tell stories. Because stories can change lives.
